Australian Catholic University has recognised the Bright and Associates 3-day career counselling, coaching and assessment course as counting as 25% Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) toward the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Career Education). This course covers the competencies in the CICA standards for entry into the Profession as a Professional Careers Advisor. The course is innovative and dynamic.
Presenting the very latest research and developments in the International career field. The team of academics associated with the program are highly experienced and published career professionals and counsellors . The course is unique in having associated with it, two Professorial Positions - Professor Jim Bright and Professor Robert Pryor that ensures that the content is evidence-based and up to date as they are very active international researchers with over 300 published papers, books, chapters, tests, card sorts, conference presentations and reports between them.. The ACU course is taught face-to-face in Sydney and Melbourne, with the possibility of future courses in other states.
Each subject is taught over two weekends, which allows students the opportunity to interact with both the lecturer and their fellow students, in a dynamic, challenging and stimulating atmosphere. The face-to-face nature of this course sets it apart from many others, and is something that the students highly value because it allows so many more opportunities for access to the experts and the opportunity to express and challenge ideas and processes.
Students can get 25% RPL for attending the Bright and Associates 3-day Career counselling, coaching and assessment course. The approved RPL means that students do not have to enrol in or complete subject EDS612 Postmodern Global Workplace. The process involves completing an application form (download it here) that guides you through a simple process of demonstrating your learning from our course. There is a nominal administration fee (approximately $150 as at Dec 2006) to process the application. RPL is available to all students who have successfully completed the Bright and Associates 3-day course.

EDSS609 Counselling for Career Development 10 cp
A range of counselling strategies underpinned by career counselling theories will be demonstrated and examined in this unit which aims to develop professionalswho can adapt to a wide range of individuals and school settings. Consideration will also be given to the physical aspects of the counselling environment that impact upon students and caregivers.
EDSS610 Educating for Lifelong Career Development 10 cp
This practical subject focuses on innovative teaching and learning strategies for career and work education for students to make successful transitions to further education, training and work. A wide range of strategies will be demonstrated and evaluated so as to providecareers professionals with a wide range of learning activities designed to develop in students competencies from the Australian Blueprint for Career Development. Special consideration will be given to the role of government and community agencies and strategies for collaborative action with schools.
EDSS611 Professional Practice and Development 10 cp
This unit concentrates on developing skills for researching information, building relationships and making effective presentations in school settings that foster a whole school culture of career development for students. Particular emphasis is given to the design, implementation, management and evaluation of career development programs for students from the middle years to young adults. It aims to develop in practitioners a culture of ongoing professional development in a dynamic educational and work environment. There is a mandatory two day professional placement in an educational setting which aims to provide a realistic view of a broad range of client services.
EDSS612 The Postmodern Global Workplace 10 cp
This unit examines issues in the workplace that affect the individual and society as a whole, ranging from work/life balance issues to skills shortages that are impacting on the economy. There is an emphasis on modern human resource practice and its effect on resume preparation, interviews and personality/vocational tests. Consideration will also be given to employability and enterprise skills and the way these are affecting the workplace and preparation for employment. Special emphasis will be given to the reforms in the national training framework with particular reference to vocational education in schools.
